Epidermal turnover, the time it takes for a cell to travel from the base of the epidermis to the surface and shed, runs roughly 40 to 56 days in a healthy adult. In a teenager it is closer to 28. It slows steadily with age.
That number is the reason a lot of skincare advice is wrong about timing. If you change a product and judge it after ten days, you have not seen a single full cycle of the skin that product is meant to affect. You are reading surface hydration, not turnover.
It is also why we space facials six weeks apart rather than four. Booking closer than one turnover cycle mostly means paying to interrupt the work the last appointment started.
The practical version: give any new active a full eight weeks before you decide. Photograph in the same light. If nothing has moved by then, it is not the right active for you.
